Head lice are common, harmless, and treatable. They are found in schools across all income levels in the Philippines and are not a sign of poor hygiene — they actually prefer clean hair. Here is exactly what to do when you find lice in your child's hair, and how to stop them from coming back.

1Understanding Head Lice in Philippine Schools

Head lice are tiny insects that live on the human scalp and feed on small amounts of blood. They are extremely common among school-age children in the Philippines regardless of socioeconomic level. Lice spread through direct head-to-head contact — common during play, sports, group study, and taking group selfies. They cannot fly or jump and do not survive more than 24 to 48 hours away from the scalp. The most common symptom is itching at the back of the neck and behind the ears — but itching may not appear until four to six weeks after initial infestation, so many children have lice for weeks before itching begins. Regular checking is important especially if classmates have been affected.

2How to Check for and Confirm Lice

To check your child's hair, work in good natural light or under a bright lamp. Part the hair in small sections using a fine-toothed comb. Focus on behind the ears, the nape of the neck, and the crown. Adult lice are two to three millimeters long, tan to grayish-white, and move quickly — they are difficult to spot as they avoid light. Nits (lice eggs) are more reliably found: tiny oval specks firmly cemented to the hair shaft very close to the scalp, typically within one centimeter. Unlike dandruff which slides along the hair shaft, nits require force to remove. Use a fine-toothed comb on wet hair and examine the comb under a lamp after each stroke to confirm.

3Effective Treatment Available in the Philippines

Permethrin one percent cream rinse is the first-line treatment for head lice in the Philippines, available without prescription at Mercury Drug, Watsons, and most pharmacies. Brand names include Nix and various generics. Apply to dry hair for ten minutes before rinsing. This kills live lice but not all nits, which is why a second treatment after nine to ten days is essential. After treatment, use a fine-toothed metal nit comb on conditioner-coated wet hair to remove nits systematically. Wash all recently used bedding, pillowcases, and clothing in hot water above 55°C. Bag soft toys that cannot be washed for 48 hours. There is no need to fumigate the home or treat pets.

When to See a Doctor

Consult a doctor if over-the-counter treatments have been used correctly twice without success, as this may indicate permethrin-resistant lice requiring a different treatment. Also see a doctor if the scalp has open sores or signs of bacterial infection from scratching, which requires antibiotic treatment.

Key Takeaways

  • Lice are common in all Philippine schools regardless of hygiene level and spread through direct head contact.

  • Apply permethrin treatment to dry hair, repeat after nine to ten days, and comb out nits on wet hair with a fine-toothed comb.

  • Wash all bedding and hair accessories in hot water after treatment — no need to fumigate the home.

What I Learned

"I panicked when I found lice in my daughter's hair and thought I had to call the school and clean the whole house. Our doctor calmed me down: buy Nix, treat twice, comb the nits, wash the sheets. Done in a weekend." — Nora, mom of Sofia

Doctor's Perspective

"Lice are a social problem, not a hygiene problem. The children in my clinic with the most persistent lice often have the cleanest hair. Treat with permethrin, comb meticulously, repeat after nine days. That is all you need."
