What to Expect Each Month

Key milestones, vaccines, and health watches for each stage of your newborn's first year

0–1 Month

  • Monitor umbilical cord stump — keep dry, never submerged
  • Jaundice: check for yellow skin/eyes in first week
  • Newborn screening at 24–72 hours (DOH required)
  • BCG and Hepatitis B vaccines at birth
  • Breastfeed 8–12 times per day

2–3 Months

  • First DTwP/DTaP, IPV, Hib, Hepatitis B combo vaccine
  • PCV (pneumococcal) vaccine — protects from pneumonia
  • Rotavirus oral vaccine (RV1 or RV5) — 1st dose
  • Baby starts social smiling and cooing
  • Tummy time 30 min/day to build neck strength

4–6 Months

  • Second round of DTwP/DTaP + PCV + Rotavirus vaccines
  • Introduce solid foods at 6 months — rice cereal + mashed veggies
  • Continue breastfeeding alongside solids
  • Baby may start rolling over and sitting with support
  • Heat rash (bungang araw) common — keep cool and dry

7–9 Months

  • Crawling begins — baby-proof your home now
  • Third dose of combo vaccines + booster doses
  • Introduce finger foods and varied textures
  • Watch for ear infections — tugging at ears, fussiness
  • Dengue awareness heightens — use mosquito protection

10–12 Months

  • First steps and first words ('mama', 'dada') expected
  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine at 9 months
  • Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine at 12 months
  • First birthday — transition from formula to cow's milk
  • Annual dengue season (June–Oct) — full mosquito protection

When to Go to the ER — Immediately

Do not wait for a clinic appointment. Go to the nearest hospital ER if your newborn shows any of these signs.

Fever of 38°C or higher in a baby under 2 months

Difficulty breathing, rapid or labored breathing

Seizures or convulsions of any kind
