Health Awareness

Common Toddler Illnesses in the Philippines

Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease

HIGH RISK

Very common in daycare settings. Blister-like sores in mouth and on hands/feet. Highly contagious — 7–10 day recovery at home.

Dengue Fever

HIGH RISK

Toddlers cannot describe pain clearly. Watch for sudden high fever, refusal to eat, irritability, and rash.

Respiratory Infections

Toddlers average 6–8 colds per year. See a doctor if fever lasts more than 3 days or breathing is labored.

Diarrhea & Stomach Bugs

Rotavirus can cause severe dehydration. ORS is critical — continue feeding. If no wet diaper in 8 hours, go to the ER.

Ear Infections

Toddlers tug at ears and are more fussy. More common after colds. Usually resolves with antibiotics.

Febrile Seizures

HIGH RISK

Occur in 2–5% of Filipino children age 6mo–5yr. Frightening but usually harmless. Lay child on side, time the seizure, go to ER.
